Kim Aikens has had a passion for photography for many years. Over the last four years, however, her interest has taken a new turn with digital photography and computer imaging. This has allowed her to explore ideas not previously possible with traditional photographic techniques.
With her imaging, Kim tries to explore both beauty and meaning. Also a writer, Kim's work often puts images with pieces of poetry and short stories which she has personally written. Individual artistic pieces often take many hours to complete. Beginning with a vision, Kim then shoots individual photographic elements which she composites into a final image. Numerous, sometimes hundreds, of variations are worked through. Some are discarded but many are saved, until a final version is reached and printed.
A physician in Internal and Integrative Medicine by training, Kim attended Middlebury College then graduated from the University of Vermont with an MD in 1982. Although she continues to practice medicine on a part time basis, Kim dedicates considerable energy to her artistic endeavors. In addition, she is an avid horse lover and dressage trainer, hence her interest in equine subjects.
